This store is definitely not just for tourists and is worth a visit at any time of the year when searching for that ideal present for yourself or others.
‘Rachel’s Story’
Owned and run by Rachel, the first ‘Spoilt for Choice’ shop was opened 10 years ago on Maiden Street by Rachel and her husband. Sadly, when Rachel was 6 months pregnant, both her husband and mother died within a short time of each other. Despite this, Rachel decided to continue with the shop, taking her daughter to work with her.
18 months later the current shop at St Alban Street became available. Although totally dilapidated, Rachel could see its potential and persuaded the bank to lend her enough money to buy and refurbish it. The shop had to be rebuilt from top to bottom and just 4 months later, with lots of worry and a much bigger mortgage, the new ‘Spoilt for Choice’ shop opened. Rachel continued to provide for herself and her daughter by running the two shops and selling stock at markets 3 days a week.
The current ‘Spoilt for Choice’ shop now has 2 floors offering over 100 different ranges and collectables opening up before you like a ‘tardis’. The diversity of Rachel’s stock is amazing ranging from cards and stationery to Betty Boop, Playboy, Border Fine Arts and Steiff Bears, as well as a fine range of handbags – for evening and day. The store also operates a ‘lay away club’ allowing customers a full year in which to pay for goods. If you cannot find what you are looking for just ask Rachel and she will try to get it for you.
When Rachel first opened her shop, many people asked her why she chose that particular name. Now, during the summer months, she regularly hears people saying in the shop – ‘Oh you are spoilt for choice’ and indeed you are!
